\u201cEn los a\u00f1os 2000, el libro Interface Culture de Stephen B. Johnson se\u00f1alaba que los artesanos de esa d\u00e9cada ser\u00edan ingenieros de software y dise\u00f1adores de productos\u201d, afirma Narain Jashanmal (Alpina, 1997), actual vicepresidente de productos del servicio de streaming MUBI. \u201cCreo que estaba en lo cierto. Lo que se puede hacer con c\u00f3digo o dise\u00f1o de productos es tan creativo como lo que se puede hacer con una c\u00e1mara, un bol\u00edgrafo o un pincel\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Narain deber\u00eda saberlo: ha estado a la vanguardia de las redes sociales desde que se uni\u00f3 a Facebook, ahora Meta, en 2014, y progres\u00f3 hasta convertirse en director de comercio social en Reality Labs, donde fue pionero en nuevas experiencias de compra en realidad virtual y aumentada (RA\/RV). Narain se\u00f1ala que la IA es buena para ayudar con cosas en las que los humanos no son tan buenos. \u201cEs incre\u00edblemente dif\u00edcil para un humano idear 100 escenarios diferentes basados en datos\u201d, afirma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dariane Hunt (Exeter, 1986) es directora de Experiencia de Usuario para IA Digital en el banco Wells Fargo y tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 entusiasmada con el potencial de la IA para crear mejores experiencias. En la universidad no le interesaban los ordenadores, dice, porque no cre\u00eda que el lenguaje que necesitaba aprender para comunicarse con ellos fuera intuitivo. \u201cLo que m\u00e1s me entusiasma de la IA es que ahora podemos hablar con los ordenadores usando nuestro propio lenguaje. En Wells Fargo tenemos una gran base de clientes y siempre estamos tratando de crear dise\u00f1os que est\u00e9n optimizados para el mayor n\u00famero de personas. Pero las personas tienen diferentes formas de procesar la informaci\u00f3n. Dariane comenz\u00f3 su carrera como dise\u00f1adora digital, aprendiendo sobre la marcha en los a\u00f1os 90, cuando la banda ancha y la televisi\u00f3n interactiva iban a ser las grandes novedades. Se encontr\u00f3 en lo que entonces era un campo completamente nuevo: la experiencia del usuario y la arquitectura de la informaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Su primer contacto con la IA fue en Bank of America, cuando le pidieron que desarrollara una skill de Alexa para el banco. Al final, las dificultades en torno a la seguridad de los datos fueron limitantes y se dieron cuenta de que el banco ten\u00eda los recursos y las capacidades para desarrollarla internamente. \u201cComenzamos a aprovechar la IA, espec\u00edficamente el procesamiento del lenguaje natural, para crear una experiencia multimodal en nuestra aplicaci\u00f3n m\u00f3vil. Erica, uno de los primeros asistentes bancarios impulsados por IA, se lanz\u00f3 en 2018. Hunt ahora est\u00e1 trabajando en una herramienta similar en Wells Fargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 depara el futuro a quienes quieran trabajar en este campo? Como ingeniero de software s\u00e9nior en el Vision Products Group de Apple, Noah Gamboa (La Baita, 2014) est\u00e1 en una buena posici\u00f3n para saberlo. Su amor por la tecnolog\u00eda comenz\u00f3 en su clase de inform\u00e1tica en Aiglon y creci\u00f3 en la Universidad de Stanford, donde obtuvo una licenciatura en Ciencias y una maestr\u00eda en Ciencias en Ingenier\u00eda El\u00e9ctrica. En Stanford, se interes\u00f3 en la IA y trabaj\u00f3 con investigadores del c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n con el objetivo de construir modelos de IA que puedan analizar la tomograf\u00eda computarizada de un paciente y predecir su pron\u00f3stico de supervivencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despu\u00e9s de graduarse, hizo una pasant\u00eda en Apple, donde trabaj\u00f3 en Siri y luego se incorpor\u00f3 a la empresa en su puesto actual. \u201cEstoy muy entusiasmado con la computaci\u00f3n espacial, porque te permite ver el mundo como podr\u00eda ser, no como es\u201d, afirma. \u201cActualmente estoy usando Apple Vision Pro y es perfecto, lo que me permite usar la computaci\u00f3n espacial de una manera completamente nueva\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noah cree que la mejor manera de pensar en forjarse una carrera en este \u00e1mbito es empezar a experimentar. \u201cSi ves algo que te parece interesante y crees que podr\u00eda hacer esto otro, intenta que haga aquello otro. O si tienes un rompecabezas que no est\u00e1s seguro de c\u00f3mo resolver, pero te gusta intentarlo y solucionarlo, es una buena se\u00f1al de que la nueva tecnolog\u00eda (ya sea IA, RA, VR o cualquier otra cosa de vanguardia) es algo para ti. Nunca pasa un d\u00eda en que el problema sea el mismo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dariane afirma que siempre necesitaremos personas que piensen de forma creativa y estrat\u00e9gica y que puedan sintetizar toda esa informaci\u00f3n en algo coherente. La IA generativa, se\u00f1ala, no piensa. \u201cEs una tecnolog\u00eda predictiva; un algoritmo inteligente que puede evaluar la respuesta m\u00e1s probable a una pregunta. Pero en realidad no comprende. Siempre vamos a necesitar humanos que puedan pensar de forma cr\u00edtica y que puedan sintetizar y resolver problemas de formas mucho m\u00e1s intuitivas que cualquier tipo de algoritmo de m\u00e1quina\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Narain coincide en que este tipo de adaptabilidad e ingenio ser\u00e1 muy valioso a medida que nos adentremos en un futuro impulsado por la IA. \u201cEs f\u00e1cil decir que te intimida una pieza de tecnolog\u00eda, especialmente porque la tecnolog\u00eda que est\u00e1s usando es m\u00e1s abstracta\u201d, afirma. \u201cPero tratar de comprender no significa que tengas que convertirte en un experto en aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico. Se trata de curiosidad, de hacer preguntas, escuchar, llegar al coraz\u00f3n de algo. La curiosidad es lo primero que buscar\u00eda. No solo curiosidad intelectual pura, sino curiosidad sobre c\u00f3mo funcionan las cosas. Y profundizar en las cosas que nos hacen exclusivamente humanos\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
